Why were you interested in a graduate position at C&W?

Firstly, I was always attracted to C&W as it is a privately owned firm. I was concerned that if I was to work for a large publicly held organisation, I would become another cog in the wheel and the opportunities to progress my career would be hindered. At C&W there is both the paternal atmosphere, and the opportunity to be rewarded for out-performance. The second reason is the resources and capabilities that C&W can offer their graduates – possible European exposure and the ability to provide the Property Finance & Investment APC pathway.

What was the recruitment process like to get your position?

Whilst undertaking my MSc in 2008 / 2009, the prospects of obtaining a job in Real Estate where particularly uncertain. Acquiring a position with C&W at this particular point in the market cycle was intense. Whilst noting this, the recruitment process that C&W enacted reasserted that my peers are amongst the forefront of the graduate industry.

Where did your interest in the investment side of property stem from?

During my MSc, I decided to opt for a module in Real Estate Securities. To my surprise, this was my favourite module by far, having opened up the world of indirect real estate investment. Building on this, C&W enabled me to gain exposure to the Corporate Finance department during a one-month internship at which point I realised that this should be my focus. This since led to me completing my Investment Management Certificate helping bolster the situation.

You have completed a 2nd rotation in Paris. What have been the highpoints?

The ability to think more laterally when considering real estate investment in an international context. My rotation in Paris has provided a deeper understanding when considering investment markets in differing countries (tax, legislation, lease structures, econometrics). From a less formal view point, the English property ex-pat community is nothing short of excellent making for great networking and social activities. Coupled with Parisian culture – not all that bad !

You took part in the RREF mentoring scheme, did you think you benefitted from being apart of the programme now you have secured a graduate role?

Definitely. It is very difficult to put a value on being able to pick the phone up to a Real Estate professional who is willing to share their vast amount of experience.

Are you involved in any of the sports/social activities at C&W?

I like my sport, so I try to take most opportunities to get involved. This has involved 7’s rugby, internal tennis and inter-company soft ball matches after work. I also represent C&W on Reading University’s RG10 committee.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years time?

I see myself focused on indirect real estate. I am particularly interested in private equity real estate vehicles and capital raising. In five years time I hope I will be a well rounded individual that is capable of helping C&W expand its indirect capabilities.
